My Beef with the Grammys

I do this every year. I sit down Sunday night with some junk food and watch the Grammys.

I couldn't tell you how long I've been doing this. Probably as long as I've been into music. After all, my musical tastes started off completely mainstream. Heck, the first tape I ever got was George Michael's Faith and the first CD I got was Eat the Rich by Areosmith. Before I knew better, I got a lot of my information about was popular from the Grammys.

The older I got, the more of a joke I found this whole show. It's a crazy display of bad combination of artist, awful outfits and a constant reaffirmation that the people who vote for the Grammys just don't understand music.

In 2009 I think I was as devastated as everyone else to read about the horrible beating Chris Brown gave Rihanna the night before the Grammys. I can't look at Rihanna now without seeing her brused and battered face. I'm not crazy about the music either of them produce, but that's besides the point here. My main beef with the Grammys is that they've asked him back to perform, year after year. Nominate him, give him a Grammy (what does a Grammy really mean anyway?), but why keep asking him back to do whatever it is he does.

I do believe people can change, don't get me wrong on that one. I also believe people deserve a second chance. What I don't believe in is seeing this dude's face around everywhere.The Grammys give him all this love and respect when frankly, I think he needs to work a little, nay, a LOT harder to earn it. What has he done to clean the slate since 2009? Has he spoken out? Has he gotten help? Has he constantly spoke out against domestic abuse? I don't follow the dudes career but I do read my fair share of gossip websites (it's my guilty pleasure) and I honestly can't say I read one story about Chris Brown doing anything proactive about his temper. Did he try to raise the profile of abused women in a positive way? No. Did he give any interviews where he really sounded upset and sorry about what he did? No. I get the feeling dude is trying hard to just cover it up and make sure people just somehow forget how he beat the tar out of a women in his car.

I'm upset with the Grammys for constantly giving this guy a platform where he can receive praise and adulations galore. I'm not sure why its bothering me more this year than others, but its really making my blood boil. Treat the boy like the child he is and punish him, or he won't learn.

Alright, enough of a rant on that. Back to the Grammys...

New epsiode of Punks in Parkas Tonight!

Wow, that cold I had last week whipped my ass. Not only was my head in a constant bubble, but come Thursday morning, I had just about completely lost my voice. Fantastic. What is a girl to do?

I stayed home, burrowed deep in a blanket, drinking cup after cup of tea with lemon and honey. Suffice to say that by early this week, my voice was back in full force!

Take that suckers!

Now that I've missed a week in the booth, I've got some catching up to do.

First off, I wanted to break the news last week that I'll be a guest DJ at the next Shindig! event at the Yellow Dog on March 4th. I'm super excited to be a part of this great event. Stay tuned to this spot for more information on what is going to be a fantastic show! I'm really excited about this one!

Today's show will be featuring a collection of 45s I recently acquired from the collection of a local great, Collin Bryce (promise, your cheque is in the mail, sir). I often wondered what it would be like to take a snippet from the record collection of Mr. Bryce, and now I have. Tonight on the show, I'll play some of the fantastic stuff collected from the man they call Mohair Sweets.

On a sad note, a few weeks back Don Cornelius, the mastermind behind Soul Train passed away. What started out as a groovy little music show soon became a part of american psychie and changed the way people thought about black culture and music. I love soul train and was really sad to hear about his passing. Tonight on the show, will relive a little bit of Soul Train and talk a bit about that funky show.

R.I.P. Etta James

I fell in love with Etta James in my first year of University. I hear her cover of "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" and was completely hooked.

Her strong, sometimes sweet and sometimes raspy voice was never far from my head. I turned to her when I was sad, when I was happy and when I needed a song to motivate me to find the better path in life.

She tried hard, I believe. And I like to think she succeeded. She will forever be an imagine of impossible strength, and for that, I'll always have her in my heart.

This past weeks show started off as a tribute to Etta James and just sort of evolved from there. The show will be available for download next week. Keep your eyes here for the link when its available.

Oh Ray - where to start with you?

You turned gospel to the devils music. You worked in seedy clubs and spiked your vines a little too much. You loved.. a lot of women... at the same time.

The story of Ray Charles is a good one. Check out the movie Ray if you haven't yet. Better yet, get a good biography of the guy. The written story is more that engaging.

Opened the show up today with with the bizarre Ray Charles Love Triangle and I then let the music just flow from there. Ended the show with a preview of some of the acts that will be gracing the stage this year at Coachella 2012.

Billy Be Childish... Billy Be Good

Was fantastic to be back in the booth, kicking of 2012 with a great episode of the show. This past weeks show was a tribute to none other than Billy Childish, a man who I am not afraid to profess my undying love to.

Billy Childish is prolific, amazing and mystifying. And it kills me, just kills me that he is not the most famous renaissance man of our time.

Lenoon, Dobie Gray, Small Faces... Oh My!

What a week it has been...

First off, John Lennon was taken from us too early 31 years ago today. Tonight on the show, we'll play a few of my favorite tracks and think about the day the music world kind of stood still...

A northern soul and mod great was also lost to us this week. Dobie Gray, a soul great, died this Wednesday at the age of 71 one. I always loved Dobie Gray's smooth voice and wonderful delivery. Some of his songs were fantastic and full of amazing soul..

On the brighter side, The Small Faces are finally getting some much deserved recognition and are going to be introduced into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

We'll discuss all this and more tonight on Punks in Parkas - tune in!

Ann Margret's Baked Beans

When I was a young teenager, in the middle of my high school career, I went through a horrible bought of insomnia brought on by depression. It was awful. I would go weeks where I would be lucky if I slept a total of five hours.

I spent many a night reading books and watching strange movies on late night TV. Living out in the country, we never had cable and my late night movie watching was kind of limited. On rare occasions, I was able to pass a VHS tape off to my Aunt and Uncle with a list of times and channels to record. Weeks later, I would get these VHS tapes back, full of these strange movies I found while reading the short movie descriptions in the back of the TV guide that we got delivered with the Winnipeg Free Press.

This is how I first seen many of the movies that I enjoy today - Quadrophina, Liztomania, Dr Strangelove and Breakfast at Tiffany's to name a few.

One movie I had my aunt record for me was The Who's Tommy. I was introduced to The Who at a young age - my dad enjoyed them greatly and my mom often told me how she loved the song "Boris The Spider,' so when I saw that there was movie created around their first Rock Opera, well, I had to see it.

I remember the first moment I watched the movie very clearly. It was late, very late and was probably a weekend. I usually stayed in my bedroom on weekdays, trying hard to get some sleep for school, but on weekends, I would camp out in our TV room, watching movies. I was in an insomniac daze while watching the movie and some moments blended into each other, but other scenes were crystal clear.

Of course, the scene that I kept thinking about the next day was the infamous "Break The Mirror" scene with Ann Margret. You've seen it, I know you have. She is wearing this incredible white knitted jump suit and is dancing around in a pristine white room. She is laying on the satin bed, flipping through the channels on the TV with her remote control, looking completely bored with what's on the TV. At the climax of the scene, she throws a champagne bottle at the TV, and it explodes. First with suds, second with baked beans and lastly, with chocolate.

It's amazing, it's is sexy, it's deranged and it was probably one of the most bizarre things I had seen at that time. The Who's Tommy quickly became one of my favorite movies.

I read today that Ken Russell, the director behind The Who's Tommy had passed away this past weekend. I often wondered about him and his mind frame. Was it him who decided to have Ann Margret roll around in that shit-colored mess? What made him even THINK of that?

Regardless - the movie is visually stunning and for that alone, it should be watched.

Never Dreamed...

I had a moment today. A small, very personal moment that I am having a hard time understanding, to be honest.

I was in the car, driving alone to my hair appointment. There was nothing good on the radio and the car trip is so short that I couldn't justify looking for a CD to play. For the ten minutes I was in the car I thought I'd just let the radio do its thing.

Station after station disappointed, until I flipped to one station and heard the last half of Adele's "Someone Like You." I've heard the song a million times, I'm sure we all have. Sometime I think I've had enough of the song, and I usual ignore it. Tonight it was on the radio, it was good song and all the other stations were failing me. It was a sign. I started to hum along and then sing. Near the end, when the music goes quiet and Adele sings the line "Never mind, Ill find someone like you. I wish nothing but the best for you, too" well, I lost it. I choked up and started to cry pretty hard.

Why? For a moment I heard the hurt in her voice, and I understood a little bit of it.

But then I thought about Adele, signing that song night after night, and wondered if she had just become completely numb to the lyrics, thinking that after performing it that many times, she's probably gone beyond being emotional about that song.

I think I was wrong.

At about the 1:30 mark she asks the crowd to sing along with her, asking them to do the same lyrics in "Someone Like You" that broke me down today. And Adele, well, she gets choked up. It may be from the memories, or it may be from the joy of hearing hundreds of people sing your song. It's a beautiful little moment and whatever the true reason behind her little moment of emotional purity, I felt connected.

I am not one for live show DVDs, but I do think I'll be checking this one out.

It's been a busy two weeks.. Where to start?

Winnipeg is in a tizzy right now. After a long hiatus, the Winnipeg Jet's are back and tonight is the first home game of the season. Needless to say, much of Winnipeg is a buzz with that. Me? I'm not too much of a hockey fan but I am happy to see the people of Winnipeg excited about something - Go, Jets, Go!

We all heard by now that Steve Jobs, the 'mastermind' behind Apple has passed away. I was thinking about it tonight and honestly, I would be lost without my iPod. I listen to it every day, all day at work. I use it to keep up with current events, I use it to get ready for my show during the day and I use it to keep up with the music scene. So, a heartfelt thank you, Mr. Jobs. I know many people may curse what he did, and have huge spite for Apple products, but to be truthful, if I could only take one material possession with me, it would be my fully stocked up iPod.

Sorry about not being living in the booth last week. I had to cancel my guest also, who were going to come in to talk about the Rocking Richards Record Show and Sale. If your a fan of this show, you know the drill. If not? Well, twice a year Rocking Richard and company come on the show to promote the twice a year sale - one in the spring, the other in the fall. The sale was last Sunday and while I wasn't able to make my own show, I WAS able to make it down for a little bit to the sale. A little bit was all I needed. In about 45 minutes, I managed to spend over $60. There are some great finds at the show and I will be playing nothing but music I picked up from Rocking Richards tonight on the show! This could be interesting because, to be honest, I haven't really had a chance to listen to all the music I got yet!!!

Two weeks ago, I had DJ Cabernet and Mod Marty on to talk about SHINDIG! That show is now available for download HERE! It's a good one so get it while its hot!

Tonight on the show, I am super excited to be joined in the booth by Mod Marty and DJ Cabernet. We'll be discussing mod music and their regular night, SHINDIG!

Speaking of Shindig, I picked up this groovy little magazine out of the UK called, well, Shindig. Billed as a magazine all about psych, garage, prog, powerpop, soul and folk, how could I not? The magazine is printed quarterly and I have been more than enjoying my copy. Cover of the magazine? None other than the Electric Prunes. How did I not know of this magazine sooner? Subscription? A whopping 39 pounds (close to $63.00) for four issues. I got mine for $13.00 at a magazine store in the shops of Winnipeg Square. I think I'll stick to getting it there...

I think maybe its time to bring the big bag o' 45s to the station and maybe give them a spin. Hard to say. I've been battling a migraine most of the day, so what will sooth the head the best?

Happy National Vinyl Record Day

On August 12th 1877, our dear friend Thomas Edison invented the phonograph.

And the world after would never be the same.

Music trends and mediums seem to come and go -reel to reel, 8-track, tapes, even CDs seem to be on the way out.. but Vinyl.. somehow Vinyl still seems to have a home in the hearts and souls of music lovers all over the world.

So tomorrow is National Vinyl Record Day! To celebrate, on the show tonight, I am playing some of my favorite records! I suggest you tune in, its going to be an interesting, scratchy ride!

Amy Winehouse and '27 Club' tribute tonight

Excited to be back in the booth tonight after a bit of a hiatus. Damn summer colds!

Regardless got a great show planned. A tribute to the late, great Amy Winehouse to start everything off and a look at some of the other fantastic talents we lost way to soon at the age of 27.

Apparently it was hard, very hard for Amy Winehouse as well. The soul diva was found dead today in her London home - age 27.

Like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin before her, Winehouse provided some amazing music in her day and left us too early.

I was always a big fan and was personally sadden to to hear this. She had a huge voice, great talent and a very public battle with drugs and alcohol. So sad to see that even with all that fame and all those people around you that no one was able to help Amy. Of course, you can only help someone who wants to be helped, correct?

Regardless, the music world lost an incredible talent today...

Not Fade Away

I make no bones about it. One of my favorite early tracks by the Rolling Stones is "Not Fade Away." It wasn't until years later, after hearing that song more than once and buying the Rolling Stones London Years single did I realize it was a cover. Silly, I know, but before Punks in Parkas, I never really took the time to know these things.

Not Fade Away is one of those songs that is completely timeless and has been covered more times than people realize. The original was released in 1957 by Buddy Holly:

It's pretty simple and basic with a very typical rockabilly sound to it.

The Rolling Stones version of the song was released in 1964 and was the A side of the bands first single. The group had major success with the song and its not hard to hear why. The beat is super danceable, Mic is spot on with his singing and the band has a dirty rock sound that they just went with in those days. The Beatles were the good guys, while The Rolling Stones were the devil... worked for them, that's for sure:

Now all my friends now how much I really don't like Rush, but I have to admit, their cover of Not Fade Away, released in 1974 is really good. It's clean, not full of that prog rock garbage that I just have a huge distaste for. It's got that same Bo Diddly beat as the focus and like the Rolling Stones, it was the groups first single:

Now, the song is receiving some sort of Renaissance with Florance and the Machine who recently recorded a pretty interesting version of the song:

girly garage rock... on vinyl!

I used to take offense when someone called me a digger...

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a digger is someone who will work their fingertips raw digging through crate after crate of vinyl. They are the people who go to record conventions, used record stores, and garage sales in the hopes of finding that one gem hidden somewhere out there.

I think, over the years, I've come to term with my 'digger' status. Being a digger has helped expand my collection and expose me to things and music I never new existed.

Take, for example, girl garage rock groups. Who knew there were so many out there?

Found this record a few years back at a record convention and sale... going to be playing this and a whole wack of other records I've collected over the years on the ol' show tonight.. tune in at 9 PM CST!

If you haven't see this crew perform, you are missing out. I've seen tons of concerts, big and small, in my day and by a landslide, the Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings second performance at the Jazz Fest here in Winnipeg a few years back was the most amazing thing... EVER.

The 'old Chaos Days

This past week on the show (May 5th), I took a trip down memory lane. The show (which will be available for down load next week) focused on a lot of the music that was my first introduction to mod culture in Winnipeg and while planning the show on the car ride to UMFM that evening, I kept thinking about those songs and dancing all night long to them.

I was into the whole Mod thing before I really knew what it was. I always loved the music, the style and the whole mentality. When I learned that there was a group of people into this whole thing and that that sub-culture group had a name and a motto, something in me just became fixated and completely attached.

My introduction to the Winnipeg Mods came almost by accident. In my second year of University, I was invited to help celebrate a friend of a friends birthday at a club called The Chaos Chameleon. My friend and I were told that the club we would be going to had a retro 1960s theme night and that while it was small, it often filled up quickly and we shouldn't get there too late.

The Chaos Chameleon was located on the second floor of a run down building in the heart of the Osbourn Village in downtown Winnipeg. The building used to house a bar called Die Machine, where I actually spent my 18 birthday a few years prior. The bottom floor was a pop/dance bar and the top floor was a goth/industrial bar complete with a caged in dance floor. In the few years since my 18th birthday, the club closed down and re-opened as something different with the Chaos Chameleon on the top floor and a live band venue on the bottom.

I hadn't been to the club since it was the Die Machine, but didn't expect that the new owners gave the place the face lift it desperately needed. It was still a shit hole and I suppose that was really part of its charm. The horrible stained walls, the bathroom stalls without doors didn't matter, nor did the fact that a dead body was stuffed between the walls in that building during our time there (another one of Winnipeg's amazing murder stories).

We arrived at the club early that night. Probably too early. I remember walking into the bar and while the music was loud and retro, there was really no body else but us and staff in the club. I really didn't mind as the music was incredible and soon, coming early to the 'Chaos' before the crowds on a Saturday night became tradition.

My first night there touched me in a way I just can't put into words. Its almost embarrassing, but its a fact that my first night at the Chaos really pushed me on a path I've been following for the last 10 plus years. I drank, I danced, I laughed and I feel in love with it. Everything just seemed to mesh at the Chaos - the people and the music and the style. It was something really special to be a part of and while I felt like I caught the tail end of the train, I was excited to be on board.

I became a regular rather quickly and soon became friends with the nights resident DJ, The Invisible Man - a friendship that has lasted to this day. I used to joke with I-Man in those days that I wanted his job, that I really wanted to be in that DJ booth, playing the music that everyone was getting off to all at the same time. It shouldn't come as a surprise that The Invisible Man is probably the reason I now have Punks in Parkas and have enjoyed some success DJ'ing in the club. He has taught me all I know and I do adore the man.

Something about the Chaos got into my blood. When our night, called Loaded Club, finally closed down, I mourned a bit and felt somewhat lost. Our collective of Mods had lost their club house. What now? We flounder, we felt a bit lost but we always managed to find each other when the music was good and the company was right. And as in true Mod fashion, the beast rose again, this time as The Winnipeg Mod club at the Pyramid and I was lucky enough to be close enough to the heart of the club to be considered a main artery. While I wasn't a resident DJ, I did spin there and often and I could be seen almost every night in the DJ booth, camera in one hand, Gin and Tonic in the other.

Since then we've all gone back into a sort of hiding. Mod Club at the Pyramid is no more and all of us Winnipeg Mods sneak out of hiding once in a while when the music calls. Its harder these days, as we are all getting older, raising families and doing other such things. The only thing we aren't producing is the next generation of Winnipeg Mods to take over. Where are they? When will they show?

I'm curious to see who is going to carry this on for us. I do Punks in Parkas not just for myself and for the Mods I know and love in Winnipeg - but I do it for the next generation, for the people looking for something to connect to, something to make them feel they belong.

It my sound a bit cheesy but to be truthful, that is what Loaded club did for me, its what the music did for me...

But I've come out (relatively) unscathed - just dealing with a very tender back.

Liking The Like

I'm addicted to Facebook - not for connecting with old, long lost boyfriends (there was a reason I didn't want to be with them anymore) or spying on old grade school friends. While, yes, those things are fun, what I love most of all is all the fantastic music that friend of mine post.

Recently, my friend Warren Wood (member of Winnipeg's The English Moccasins) posted some great music by an all girl group called The Like. The Like are described on their Facebook Fanpage as being a "60s girl group backed by the Kinks."

How perfect is that?

Bye Bye Beatles, Hello Adele

The Beatles were known, among other things, for delivering the hits. After a short while after they started writing tunes, it was pretty much a sure bet than a Lennon/McCartney (and later, a Harrison) penned track would chart and chart very high.

In 1964, the Beatles did something pretty amazing. They were the first artist to have two albums and two singles in the top five of the U.K. charts, at the same time (both the With The Beatles and Please Please Me albums along with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" were charting in the top five). This was due to the fact they were pounding out the material during this period and to that Beatlemania was starting to take every teenage girl by storm. The music was tight and has really stood the test of time.

So now, some 47 year later, that milestone, which belonged to the Beatles alone, now belongs to another British Artist. Adele came on the scene a while back, and I was instantly smitten with her style. I kept an eye on her and I was pleasantly surprised to read today that she has reached the same milestone as The Beatles did in 1964. She currently has two albums, 19 and 21 sitting in the top five, and now has two singles doing the same, "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You."

This really made me smile today, gave me a glimmer of hope for the music industry. This milestone wasn't reached by any mass produced pop starlet, or some awful boy band. It was reached by an artist, someone with a great connection to their music. Yes, THEIR music - music they write and preform and is full of heart and soul and honesty.

Good music stands the test of time. Two singles and two albums in the U.K. Top Five at the same time hasn't been done since 1964 - and those songs and those albums written and performed by The Beatles 47 years ago are as perfect and honest and wonderful today as they were back there.

Britney will fade, the mass produced auto-tuned crap will just become background noise and years down the road, I think Adele will still be standing.

And thank god for that.

So I always watch the Grammy's and I'm always horrified by the musical performances - sometimes I'm just completely stunned with what is popular with the 'kids' these days.

Well this year I was really plesantly surprised by this wonderful and soulful performance by Bruno Mars, B.O.B. and Janelle Monea

I guess soul is back in style.

And Now For Something Completely Different

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that I'll be doing something a little different on this weeks show. Instead of the usual mod fair, I will be bring you something completely different.

Two friends of mine at work have been participating in something called FAWM (February Album Writing Month) for a few years now. With the clock now ticking on FAWN, I've asked these two to come into the booth to explain just what FAWM is, how it works, how its great for the local and international music scene and lastly, how you can get involved.

Second, I will be talking to the wonderful Nathan Terin about the release of CALL*RESPONSE - a fantastic book that I think every Winnipeg music lover should own. This book is a collection of pictures and stories from the local music scene from those who live and breath it. The book has been a few years in the making and Nathan and his crew are finally ready to push their baby forth in the world! Nathan will be calling in to let us know about the book, what good it is doing for Kids Help Phone and where and when you can get it, including the fantastic release party THIS WEEKEND!

So not the usual but a fantastic show none the less!

"Femme Fatale" better than the original?

I've never hidden my love of the Velvet Underground to anyone. Probably one of my favorite songs is "Femme Fatale," writing about muse Edie Sedgwick (if your not familiar with who Edie is, check out a movie called Factory Girl. The movie isn't amazing, but its not that bad and it tells you everything you need to know about Edie and her life).

I'm always scared of covers, but Aloe Blacc's version of the Velvet Underground classic is astoundingly beautiful. And the video created for it is pure art:

The Mauds put out some incredible music since their creation in 1965 and Jimy Rogers was still rocking crowds in 2010.

So my latest musical obsession has to be Ike and Tina Turners steller album "River Deep Mountain High." Along with the title track, this LP is filled with amazing music throughout.

My favorite track, is the second song on the album, called Idolize You.

While looking it up on youtube tonight, I can across this fantastic cover of the tune...

New music from Liam Gallagher and the outcasts from Oasis

I've never hid the fact that I am a pretty huge Oasis fan. Their music shaped much of my high school and University years and some of their albums are the ones I grab when I sometimes just don't know what to listen to.

To me, nothing can really compare to the way Noel and Liam worked together, be it working harmoniously together or trying hard to stab each other in the throat. Whatever the case, the two produced some amazing music.

So with the recent split of Oasis, Liam has banded together some of the other outcasts and has formed a new group, called Beady Eye. Their first single, "Bring the Light" was released recently as a free download

It has that retro feel that I love about some of Oasis' previous tracks, but I do have to admit, it is missing some depth in the lyrics. As far as it goes, it's got a catch beat, a retro feel and I'm sure it won't flop.

AMSTERDAM – Solomon Burke, the larger-than-life "King of Rock and Soul," whose songs blended soul, gospel, country and R&B, died early Sunday at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at age 70.

Born to the sound of music in an upstairs room of a Philadelphia church, Burke was acknowledged as one of the greatest soul singers of the 1960s, but his popularity never matched that of contemporaries like James Brown or Marvin Gaye.

Even so, legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler once called Burke, "the best soul singer of all time."

Burke, a giant man with a powerful soulful voice to match, joined Atlantic in 1960 and went on to record a string of hits in a decade with the label.

Burke's family said on his website the singer died of natural causes, but did not elaborate.

"This is a time of great sorrow for our entire family. We truly appreciate all of the support and well wishes from his friends and fans," the statement said.

"Although our hearts and lives will never be the same, his love, life and music will continue to live within us forever," it added.

Two of Burke's best-known songs were boosted by featuring on the soundtracks of popular movies.

He wrote "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" in 1964 and it was later featured in the Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi movie "The Blues Brothers." The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett also recorded it.

His song "Cry To Me" featured in the background as a bare-chested Patrick Swayze danced seductively with Jennifer Grey in one of the most memorable scenes from the movie "Dirty Dancing."

According to his website, Burke was born March 21, 1940, "to the sounds of horns and bass drums" at the United Praying Band The House of God for All People in West Philly.

"From day one, literally God and gospel were the driving forces behind the man and his music," his website said.

He remained closely linked to the church as a preacher. In 2000, he played for then-Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.

Schiphol Airport police spokesman Robert van Kapel confirmed that Burke died on a plane at Schiphol. He arrived early Sunday on a flight from Los Angeles and had been scheduled to perform a sellout show on Tuesday in a church converted into a concert hall in Amsterdam with local band De Dijk.

Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and won a Best Contemporary Blues Album Grammy a year later for "Don't Give Up On Me."

Those honors sparked a renewed interest in the singer and he toured extensively around the world in recent years.

Burke and his band would play without set lists, instead performing whatever the audience wanted to hear.

"It's like turning back the hands of time instantly," he said on his website. "We can be in the middle of singing something from my recent 'Like A Fire' album, and they'll call out 'Stupidity' from 1957 and we're back 50 years!"

Burke combined his singing with the role of preacher and patriarch of a huge family of 21 children, 90 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

"Loving people," he said at a recent performance in London, "is what I do."

Back from Ottawa and No New Show This Week

Well, I'm back from a wonderful week in Ottawa visiting my sister. My son and I flew out there together and let me tell you, flying with a child isn't exactly peaches and cream. Glad to be home and was super glad to be getting back into the booth..

that is, until I found notice in my inbox that UMFM would be closed tomorrow night due to the monster construction going on right now. They are taking time tomorrow night to move the station into its temporary spot while construction finishes.

Rocking Richard tomorrow, No New Show Next Week

Heads up folks! The infamous Rocking Richard will be in the booth with me tomorrow to play some tasty vinyl and to give you all the information you will need to know about the Rocking Richards Record Show and Sale, next Sunday (October 3rd) at the Victoria Inn. Rocking Richard's sale has become a Winnipeg staple for music lovers and is the second largest sale of its kind in Canada!

Also, as the title suggests, I will be going out of town to visit my sister in Ottawa so there won't be a new show next week. But hopefully, I'll find some groovy record stores while out there and will be able to bring you tons of fun goodies when I return on October 7th,

Speaking off, if you know of a good place to dig for Vinyl in Ottawa, let me know!

TELL - Tales from the 204

Hey folks!

Well, I usually don't put much information about my other projects on the blog here, but I thought I should this time.

I'm planning a story telling event in Winnipeg in early November. The event is titled "TELL - Tales from the 204" and is a live, story telling show with people telling personal stories, live and without notes! Check out the facebook event HERE.

People seem really interested in the event and I'm excited to see that from those who are fans of the facebook page, and anyone I mention the event too.

I am looking still looking for Story Tellers for this event.

The concept is simple. Story tellers will tell a story, no longer than 10 minutes, on the theme of firsts. This theme is open to how ever you wish to interpret it! Stories must be personal and will be told without the aid of notes.

The event is going to be a fun and casual evening at Aqua Books in Winnipeg on November 4th.

Interested in getting invovled? I'm also looking for a few people to help me run the evening.

Heads up! As of this week, Punks in Parkas will be moving into its new home!

Punks in Parkas will now be heard Thursday nights at 9 PM CST on 101.5 UMFM!

I originally switched to Saturday nights after the birth of my first son. I just didn't have enough to get to the station after picking him up from day care and requested a change. Saturdays opened up, which wasn't ideal for me but was better than putting the show on hiatus!

And now, a perfect time slot has opened up and I'm jumping on it!

So what does this mean for you?

More live episodes, of course!

Tune in this Thursday (September 16th) for the first show in the new time slot.

Thursdays don't work for you? You can always grab the podcasts of the show at the UMFM website. I know this hasn't been updated in a while, but there will be some new podcasts coming in very soon!

Gnarles Barkley has teamed up with Cee Lo Green for this great retro sounding song titled "Fuck You." I heard it tonight for the first time while setting up to DJ a wedding reception tomorrow night. My friend Mod Marty (part of The BEAT!, a fantastic DJ duo here in Peg City) told me that he heard they called the song Fuck You so it wouldn't be played on top 40 radio. What station did I hear it on here in Winnipeg? Our top 40 station.. go figure.

Song is great - check it out!

The new album, Record Collection is out 9/27 in the UK and 9/28 in the U.S. via RCA.

What do you think? It's different than the retro 1960s vibe Ronson created with Amy Winehouse and others on his album Verses.

Forty Four years ago today, the Beatles played their last live concert at Candle Stick park!

Beatles last concert, Candlestick Park (VIDEO) The Beatles last concert was held in Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California on August 29, 1966, a whopping 44 years ago today!

While ticket stubs from the now-famous last concert are still rolling around the internet for Beatles memorabilia fans to scoop up, most didn’t realize that the 1966 Candlestick Park show would be the last for the iconic foursome.

Oddly enough, the 1966 concert was not sold out - of the 42,5000 sets available, only 25,000 were filled.

The performance lasted just 33 minutes, thanks inpart to technical problems. The Beatles did not want to be there, and the band could no hear itself sing, so ended up going off-key. No one, except the group and a few trusted insiders, knew this would be the last concert.

Candlestick Park has since been renamed 3Com Park. The very last appearance as a performing group was an informal rooftop gathering in 1969 in London.

Summer has only just started and I'm super busy!

There will be a pre-recorded edition of Punks in Parkas on tomorrow night as I am DJ'ing my friends Wedding social! Now, if you don't live in Manitoba, you are probably going "what the @#$ is a social?" Basically, before the wedding, the bride and groom hire a DJ, book a hall, get some light 'snacky foods' (usuall rye bread, luncheon meat and cheese), get a bunch of prizes for a silent auction type thing and throw a party! Drinks are cheep, tickets are usually ten dollars and all funds raised by the event go to the bride and groom to help pay for the wedding.

In Manitoba, we do things as one big happy family.

So I will be DJ'ing this crazy party tomorrow night, so therefore, no live show!

I should be back in the booth soon enough! Have no fear!

Next Sunday Stormer is June 27th and will feature special guest, DJ K-Mac!

Malcolm McLaren, the unabashed music impresario and former manager of punk icons the Sex Pistols, has died at the age of 64.

McLaren died in Switzerland Thursday morning after a long battle with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, according to his son, Joseph Corré, and his partner, Young Kim.

Corré, who is the son of McLaren and legendary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, his former girlfriend, declined to give the exact location of his father's death because he said he wanted to avoid a media scrum.

"He was the original punk rocker and revolutionized the world," Corré, who co-founded the lingerie fashion line Agent Provocateur, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

McLaren's body is to be returned to the U.K. for burial.

London-born McLaren enrolled and left a host of art colleges and worked at numerous odd jobs before finding success in the early 1970s operating a clothing boutique with Westwood, his girlfriend and business partner at the time.

The shop — first called Let It Rock and later named Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die and, most famously, SEX — was a gathering place for early aficionados of the nascent punk movement.

McLaren's career as a music manager began with the influential U.S. band the New York Dolls, whom he met while in New York setting up another clothing business.

However, he is best known for assembling British punk icons the Sex Pistols and for his notorious antics to promote and publicize his misfit band.

The flamboyant McLaren favoured over-the-top spectacle and publicity-garnering acts of rebellion for the provocative group. These included having them sign their record contract outside of Buckingham Palace and releasing the group's track God Save the Queen in May 1977, around the time that Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee.

They also were set to play the controversial song live from a barge on the Thames across from the British Parliament. Though McLaren was arrested for the stunt, the press it garnered got him the outcome he wanted: the song shot to the top of the charts.

The band's only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, was released in 1977. The band had broken up by early 1978, and for years afterward, McLaren fought lead singer John Lydon — better known as the snarling Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten — for copyright and royalties.

McLaren subsequently managed other acts, including Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow, and eventually moved into music-making himself.

He first recorded a single for the documentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and went on to have a career writing and releasing his own music that explored a host of different genres, from hip hop to electronica to opera. His albums included Duck Rock, Fans, Waltz Darling and Paris.

More recent credits include hosting radio programs and producing films, including the documentaryFast Food Nation.

Earlier, Les Molloy, identified as McLaren's agent, reported that the punk pioneer had died in New York. However, Corré said Molloy was no longer McLaren's agent and was not authorized to speak for the family.

New Records and Alex Chilton on tonights show!

Tonight I will be playing you tracks from some of the records I picked up at last weeks Rockin' Richards show and sale. Didn't get a whole slew of albums, but did get some choice LPs and I'll be playing a few tracks from each.

As many may have heard, musician Alex Chilton, of Box Tops fame, recently passed away. Tune in for a tribute to him at the top of the show.

Singer and guitarist Alex Chilton, who topped the charts as a teen during the 1960s and later became a cult hero with Big Star, has died at age 59.

Chilton died at a hospital in New Orleans on Wednesday after experiencing what appeared to be heart problems, said his longtime friend, John Fry. Fry said Chilton's wife, Laura, was very distressed by the unexpected death.

"Alex was an amazingly talented person, not just as a musician and vocalist and a songwriter, but he was intelligent and well read, and interested in a wide number of music genres," said Fry, the owner of Memphis-based Ardent Studios.

As the teenage singer for the pop-soul outfit the Box Tops, Chilton topped the charts with The Letter in 1967. The band's other hits were Soul Deep and Cry Like a Baby.

Chilton grew up in Memphis, Tenn., and formed the band with friends from school.

His short run with Big Star brought less mainstream success, but made him a cult hero to other rock musicians, as evidenced by the title of the 1987 Replacements song, Alex Chilton.

Big Star's three 1970s albums all earned spots on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest.

Big Star, which included guitarist Chris Bell, drummer Jody Stephens and bassist Andy Hummel, didn't become a mainstream success but is largely considered the band that invented power pop.

The group's records, especially #1 Record and Radio City, are cited by many bands, from R.E.M. to Wilco and Teenage Fanclub, as being primary influences.

One of the band's tunes written by Chilton, In the Street, served as the theme for That '70s Show.

After Big Star broke up in 1974, Chilton became interested in punk rock and played with a number of acts at the legendary CBGB club. He formed the punk group the Cramps and also dabbled in jazz.

In 1993, Big Star reunited and released its fourth album, In Space.

'Fame has a lot of baggage'

Chilton said in a 1987 interview with The Associated Press that he didn't mind flying under the radar with Big Star and later as a solo artist.

"What would be ideal would be to make a ton of money and have nobody know about you," he said. "Fame has a lot of baggage to carry around. I wouldn't want to be like Bruce Springsteen. I don't need that much money and wouldn't want to have 20 bodyguards following me.

"If I did become really popular, the critics probably wouldn't like me all that much," he said. "They like to root for the underdog."

Chilton had been scheduled to perform with Big Star on Saturday at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

"Alex Chilton always messed with your head, charming and amazing you while doing so," the festival's creative director, Brent Gulke, said in an email. "His gift for melody was second to none, yet he frequently seemed in disdain of that gift."

Ringo Gets His Star

Ringo becomes a real star on Walk of Fame in special Hollywood ceremony Feb. 8

Ringo Starr will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Monday.

Details of Ringo Starr's Hollywood star ceremony were announced Tuesday by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at 1750 N. Vine St., Los Angeles, in front of the historic Capitol Records tower.
The ceremony, inaugurating the 2,401st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will feature a special salute to Ringo by members of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s All District High School Honor Marching Band.
After the star ceremony was announced last year, Ringo issued a typically light-hearted reaction, saying, “A star for a Starr – what an honor and a privilege it is to be walked on! Peace & Love.”
A press release issued Tuesday said Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Leron Gubler will speak at the ceremony, with more names to be announced.source

Etta James in Hospital

R&B singer Etta James hospitalized with infection

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Grammy-winning R&B singer Etta James has been hospitalized for about a week near her Southern California home for treatment of various ailments, including a bloodstream infection, her son said on Friday.

The 72-year-old recording star, best known for her bluesy hit ballad "At Last," grew ill after entering a detoxification center a month ago for treatment of an addiction to painkillers and over-the-counter medicine, Donto James told Reuters.

As her condition worsened, she was moved to a nursing facility, and then to Riverside Community Hospital, near her home east of Los Angeles, he said.

"She's been in a pretty big battle," said Donto James, her eldest son.

The performer is being treated for a number of ailments, including sepsis, a potentially fatal infection spread through the bloodstream, which in her case is believed to have started from a urinary tract infection, her son said.

He said that illness may have been a recurrence of an infection that she had around the time she performed "At Last" on the ABC show "Dancing with the Stars" last April.

Donto James, who played in his mother's backing band and is CEO of an addiction-recovery home in Riverside, said his mother also is suffering from speech difficulties, the cause of which he said had yet to be pinpointed.

He believes that lingering illness may have contributed to her public outburst last year over Beyonce's performance of "At Last" at an inaugural ball for President Barack Obama. James expressed anger that someone else sang her signature song for the president.
Her son said doctors at the Riverside hospital are planning to discharge James "very soon" and transfer her to a skilled nursing facility for follow-up care. He is not sure she is well enough to be released.

With songs like "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy," the three-time Grammy winner was a key figure in the early days of rock 'n' roll. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, though she diversified throughout her long career into mainstream blues, soul and R&B.

James had numerous ups-and-downs in her career and personal life, struggling with obesity and heroin addiction. In 2003 she underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost more than 200 pounds.

Teddy Pendergrass, the R&B singer, has died. He was 59 years old. The vocalist’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that his father passed away yesterday in a Philadelphia-area hospital. Pendergrass underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago, and reportedly had a difficult recovery.

As a singer, the Philadelphia-born Pendergrass played many roles, from gruff-voiced soul belter to smooth-sounding bedroom balladeer. “I grew up seeing my mother sing in church,” he wrote in his memoir, “Truly Blessed,” co-authored with Patricia Romanowski. He learned the song “If I Could Write a Letter to Heaven” when he was three years old after hearing it on the radio and sang it back to his mother, “perfectly on key and with true emotion, as if I truly understood the words.”

Pendergrass first rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, a group that produced such hits as “If You Don’t Know Me by Now.” He later mounted a successful solo career, releasing hits such as “You Can’t Hide From Yourself” and “The More I Get the More I Want,” and staging popular “Ladies Only” concerts. In 1982, he was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident. He staged a comeback, which included singing the duet “Hold Me” on Whitney Houston’s self-titled 1985 debut.

“I’ve been truly blessed in so many ways,” Pendergrass once wrote.

Willie Mitchell, a musician and record producer most associated with the soul and R&B scene in Memphis, has died. He was 81.

Mitchell died Tuesday at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, after suffering cardiac arrest on Dec. 19.

Mitchell was a producer at Hi Records in the 1970s, working with soul artists such as Al Green, Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson.

He also owned Royal Studio, where emerging talent such as Buddy Guy, John Mayer and other artists first recorded.

Born and raised in Ashland, Miss., Mitchell began playing trumpet at age eight and played with local big bands.

After college, he began playing with jazz musicians like Booker Little, Charles Lloyd and Phineas Newborn Jr.

He had several instrumental hit singles in the 1960s, including 20-75 and Soul Serenade, which was also the title of one of his hit albums. Others included Willie Mitchell Live, On Top and Robbin's Nest.

Mitchell and his band provided the musical entertainment at several New Year's Eve parties for Elvis Presley at Presley's Graceland home.

In 1970, he was put in charge of the Hi label, signing Green and Peebles and helping to advance their careers.

Green became one of the decade's top soul artists with Mitchell co-producing and engineering all of Green's albums from 1970 through 1976, as well as such Top 10 singles as Tired of Being Alone and Call Me (Come Back Home).

Green again recorded with Mitchell on 2003's I Can't Stop and 2005's Everything's OK.

Most recently, he wrote string and horn arrangements for Rod Stewart's new album of R&B covers, and produced a still-unreleased album for soul kingpin Solomon Burke.

Mitchell received a Trustees Award from the Grammy Foundation in 2008 and a street in Memphis is named after him.

Mitchell leaves a son and two daughters.

Yoko Ono to pen memoirs

Yoko Ono is to release a book about her life with John Lennon.

The 76-year-old widow of the late former Beatle has revealed she will put pen to paper over the next few years and write an autobiography about her eventful life with John.

She said: "I would love to do it. I just have to find the time.

"It will be my next book, which will be written in the next five years."

Yoko - who was blamed by many Beatles' fans for causing the legendary band to split - previously claimed she wouldn't release a book for fear of hurting the families of people close to the group, including John's ex-wife Cynthia Lennon.

John's marriage to Cynthia broke down as his fame grew and shortly after he met artist and musician Yoko.

They couple - who had a son Julian together - divorced in 1968, one year before his marriage to Yoko, the mother of his son Sean.

Yoko is looking forward to revealing all about their affair and dispel the myths surround The Beatles' break up.

A Beatles expert said: "Unlike Cynthia, Yoko has never really told her side of the Beatles story and the truth about her affair and subsequent marriage to John, so the book will be much awaited.

"She's always maintained she never broke up The Beatles, so this will be her chance to put the record straight."

John died in 1980, after being shot by deranged fan Mark Chapman outside his apartment building in New York.

Well now that we are finished with the holiday season, Punks in Parkas will be returning to the air this coming Saturday January 10th. Which means that I'll probably miss the season premier of Big Love, but these are just the scarifices I am willing to make.

It is that time of year.. UMFM will be closed for the season, so no more Punks in Parkas for 2009! It's been an interesting year and I am super excited to get back to the show in the new year.

Along with the new year comes something amazing! Punks in Parkas will be podcasted! Can't listen to the show? Don't live in Winnipeg, no fear! In 2010, all live episodes of Punks in Parkas will be available for download at the new UMFM website!

Hey everyone!

Well, I am finally starting to feel a little bit more like myself these days, so tonight I will be back in the booth doing a live edition of Punks in Parkas!

About damn time!

I've picked up some new vinyl and music so tonights show will feature that, as well as much that has helped me get over this damn cold!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like.... Flu Season?

Hi guys and dolls!

I know it's been a while since I've done a live Punks in Parks, or have updated this blog or the facebook fan page either. My appologise to all. I caught a nasty flu about three weeks ago which has now turned into a crazy cold and just this past saturday, I completely lost my voice.

How I love the holiday season.

I am working on some fantastic shows for you all and will bring them to you as soon as I can get back into the booth! The station will also be closing down for the holidays and I will be taking the time to spend Xmas with my friends and family, so over the Christmas break, there will be no Punks in Parkas. I will get you all specific dates soon.

We've had some fantastic events in the past little while, including a UMFM sponsored event called the Soul Stormer a J. Foxes Local Pub at 414 Academy. It was a night of fantastic soul, motown, Northern soul and more spun by Mr. Mulligan (Winnipeg Natural Funk Company), Mod Marty (The BEAT!), The Invisible Man (Mod Club Winnipeg) and myself! It was a great night of Vinyl bliss and we are planning to bring you another one in the new year! I will keep you posted.

Well, my other half tells me its time for me to take my medicine. Fingers crossed I will be back live in the booth next weekend.

Mod Mod Mod World tongiht after a live edition of Punks in Parkas!

Busy day for me, I must say! I just dropped my kiddo off at his Grandparents for a fun overnight sleep over with them and am now sitting at my computer, getting a few things ready for tonight.

First off, Punks in Parkas is live to air tonight at 7 PM CST. Tonight show is a goodie, featurning a ton of Garage Rock for you and a lot of cover tunes. Why all the cover tunes?

Glad you asked.

Tonight, after my show, I am booking it over to J. Foxes for The Mod Mod Mod World event! Ten DJ's will this time play their ten favorite cover tunes! Its going to be a good one and I'm super excited to take part in this event! For those of you in the Winnipeg area looking for something fantastic and FREE to do tonight, come to J. Foxes, located at 414 academy for Mod Mod Mod World! Great music, Great people, Great beer and the best fish and chips in the city!

I will be live in the booth tonight - thank god! I don't mind doing the pre-recorded shows but there is something fun about doing the show live. You never know what will happen!

Back at it..

Well, I am back at the station this very early Wednesday morning as I am getting prepared another pre-recorded show for you all! This Saturday is Halloween and my partner and I will be busy taking our little squirt around for his first time trick or treating! Sure, he may be 11 months and might not get it, but are gonna try! Regardless, I am preparing a great show for you to listen to while you do your ghoulish makeup!

Just to let you know, the UMFM website currently has Punks in Parkas as being on Tuesday nights still. This will be updated once the station launches it's new website every soon. This also means that my show logs are a bit mixed up on the website currently. I do apologise. I will post this Saturdays set list for you in the end of this update and it will be on the website, listed under the date October 27th. Ah technology, what would be do without you?

If you are in Winnipeg and looking for a great alternative to the usual Halloween fare, head down to J. Foxes (414 Academy) for a Woodstock tribute show! A band playing covers of some of the greatest songs heard at Woodstock and a DJ rocking the tunes for you all night! Should be a good one!

Winnipeg is usually a great city, full of honest folks. Everyone once in a while something happens to totally tarnish that stereotype and I hate to say it's happened to one of the Peg's greats.

DJ Co-op, known for his great mixes and for wowing many with his live DJ show, has had his turntables stolen. Shitty deal. But you can help!
